Charles Gwathmey was an American architect known as being one of the New York Five, a group of five architects based in New York City whose work was featured in the 1972 book, Five Architects. Gwathmey graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and received his Master of Architecture from Yale School of Architecture in 1962. One of Gwathmey's most popular designs was the 1992 renovation of Frank Lloyd Wright's Guggenheim Museum. He served as President of the Board of Trustees for the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies and in 1981 was elected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Gwathmey died in New York City, New York in 2009 at the age of 71.
