Mthuthuzeli Zimba, a masters candidate at the University of Cape Town, is an interdisciplinary artist passionate about storytelling. His work explores black identity, space and marginalization. Zimba believes in performances of transgression and disruption as a way of creating dialogue to confront and address unresolved socio-political issues that plague South Africa and the contemporary world.
Zimba is a 2022 Artist in Residence as part of the Art Space Is Your Space program at Wave Pool. The Wave Pool Art Space Is Your Space Program awards sponsored residencies to local, national, and international artists interested in engaging Cincinnati with their artistic practice.
As part of his residency Zimba will be creating and performing MORITI as part of the This Time Tomorrow festival with the Contemporary Arts Center. MORITI is a live performance project of a traveling shack from various locations to different spaces in the city. It is a response and contribution to the on-going conversation around the notion of displacement and homelessness. The Audience is taken into confidence to witness what is for many black South Africans an intimate ritual, on whose construction their very survival and dignity rests.
