Benjamin Ball is an artist and designer whose work occupies a territory between architecture, art, and industrial design. Ball’s practice integrates design and fabrication; his work is informed by the exploration of craft. Essential to each project is the "design" of the production process itself, with the aim of creating environments that enhance sensation, generate spectacle, and invite physical engagement.
Ball grew up in Colorado and Iowa where his mother’s involvement in theatre proved influential. He studied at the University of Colorado followed by the Southern California Institute of Architecture. While studying for his degree, he worked for architect Frank Gehry. Upon graduation, he sought work as a set and production designer for films as well as music videos and commercials. Prior to beginning his journey as an artist in 2004, his design experience ranged from work on the Disney Concert Hall and small residential architecture commissions to complex medical structures and event design.
