The Resilience of Cultural Landscapes. Perspectives from UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Fabrizio Aimar is a licensed architect and holds a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Development from the Polytechnic University of Turin, Italy. He serves as an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Architecture at Texas A&M University, USA, while also directing the Center for Heritage Conservation and holding the Woodcock Endowed Professorship in Historic Preservation. Previously, he was a Lecturer and Head of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Architecture and Design at POLIS University, Tirana, Albania.
In 2021, he was appointed to the Advisory Board of the Italian Pavilion at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition “La Biennale di Venezia”, Italy, titled “Resilient Communities.” In 2023, he was a speaker at one of the nine side events of the 18th International Architecture Exhibition “La Biennale di Venezia”, titled “Students as Researchers.” Additionally, in 2020, he was a Visiting Researcher at ICCROM, Rome, Italy. From November 2019 to March 2022, he collaborated with the Responsible Risk Resilience Centre (R3C) at the Polytechnic University of Turin, contributing to the cluster “Resilient Landscapes, Quality of Ecosystems, and Well-being.”
His expertise spans urban and landscape resilience, UNESCO cultural landscapes, built heritage, and adaptive reuse. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings. His most recent publications include the monograph “The Resilience of Cultural Landscapes: Perspectives from UNESCO World Heritage Sites” (Springer, 2024) and the collected volume “Advances in Urban Green Development and Resilient Cities” (MDPI, 2024), among others. He has also served as an anonymous reviewer for blind peer-reviewed journals published by Springer and Taylor & Francis.
His scholarly contributions and research activities have been featured in prominent Italian national newspapers, including La Repubblica, Avvenire, and La Stampa. Furthermore, he was elected as a member of the Executive Board of the Order of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects, and Conservators of the Province of Asti (Piedmont, Italy) for the term 2017–2021, having previously served as a member of the Culture Commission from 2010 to 2016. Additionally, he was an invited speaker at the 28th International Book Fair in Turin (Piedmont, Italy, 2015) and, in 2020, was a jury member for the IN/ARCH 2020 Award for the Sicily and Calabria regions.
